Little Yellow Book: Surabhi Thakker

January 20, 2017

The Little Yellow Book is a series of short interviews with different members of the Landor team. You can find out more about who they are, what they do and what inspires and motivates them to do what they do.

Surabhi Thakker, Junior Designer

Starting as an intern, she has blossomed into one of the most promising designers at Landor Mumbai. To the people in the office, she is fondly known as the resident Coldplay Groupie, an animal lover and an amateur photographer.

Born and brought up in Mumbai, she takes immense pride in being a Mumbaikar. However, that doesn’t stop her from travelling and exploring different cities and countries around the world.

She studied Commerce in high school but moved to the world of design at the first given opportunity. Fondly known as the ‘artist’ in her family, she always knew she wanted to be a designer.

She joined école intuit.lab to study Graphic Design & Visual Communication and considers this as a turning point in her life. The institute, the teachers, the course and a few internships during her vacations helped her build her foundation. It opened her mind and changed her as a designer. Of course, she was persistent and worked extremely hard through out.

In her last year at university, she started her second Instagram account @myprivatezoo as a way to unwind after a long day. This is her way to pursue her interests outside of work.

Recently, she has joined a running group. After her tiring mornings at training, busy days at Landor, creating new work for her Instagram account, she also manages to find some time with her 12 year old microscope to observe and document things.

Curious and energetic, she finds happiness in everything she chooses to do.

Why design?
I have always wanted a career where I was excited to turn up for work. And design is just that – it is anything but monotonous. It is definitely more challenging than it may appear but the need for it is everywhere & it’s always evolving. As a creative professional, you have to always be evolving too. And I love that!

What makes you really happy?
I have been a ‘tree-hugger’ since I was a toddler. Whether it’s playing with ants, petting strays or photographing wildlife, being close to nature gives me a sense of satisfaction. I truly believe all good things are wild & free.

National parks you would like to visit?
Reni Pani Jungle Lodge, Satpura Tiger Reserve  A perfect place for wildlife enthusiasts. The wildlife includes Tigers, Leopards, Sloth Bears, Indian Wild Dogs. Apart from the regular Jeep Safaris, this park also offers Walking Safaris, Elephant & Boat Safaris.

Hemis National Park, Jammu and Kashmir – Another national park on my list as here you can spot Snow Leopards. They are my favourite of the big cats & no matter how elusive they are, I hope to spot one here someday as this park has the highest density of Snow Leopards in the world.

Masai Mara National Park – The Mecca of the African Big 5. From seeing Lions in double digits at once to having Cheetahs climb onto your safari van, this park is a photographer’s paradise.
